What is Couple's Therapy?

Couples’ therapy is a form of therapy that involves you, your significant other, and a therapist. This type of therapy isn’t just reserved for married couples but can be beneficial to anyone in a romantic relationship with a partner or even people who just live with each other and have some sort of conflict. Couples’ therapy provides a judgment free zone between you and your therapist where advice and solutions can be given from an objective point of view. No relationship is perfect, and couples are bound to fight and get into arguments. With that said, if these arguments are becoming more and more frequent and taking a turn for the worse, couples therapy could be a great option. Going through with couples therapy will help you take the first step in repairing and strengthening your relationship.

What can we expect?

You can expect your first therapy session to act like an introduction between you and your therapist. This session will help you and your partner get to know the therapist and determine if you would like to continue seeing them. In the first session you will discuss details about your relationship such as how you met and how long you’ve been with each other. Aside from this, you can expect the therapist to ask some personal questions about the relationship such as what types of conflicts you are facing and identifying what some of the stressors in the relationship may be. Going forward, you and your partner will work with the therapist and learn ways to help combat conflicts that may arise or are currently occurring within the relationship. Throughout the sessions you can expect to partake in exercises to help strengthen your relationship and learn skills such as proper communication, compassion, and understanding

How long does treatment last?

Typical therapy sessions last between 45-60 minutes. As for the frequency of therapy sessions that really depends on you, your partner, and your therapist. Some couples may look to have sessions once or twice a week, while others may have sessions every other week or once a month. Generally, you can expect to have sessions more frequently when you are first starting therapy. Some factors that go into determining the frequency of sessions are financials, the current state of the relationship, and the availability of both you and your partner.
